Aging Research

National Institutes of Health (USA) and the Biotechnology & Biological Research Council (UK) - Partnering Awards to Support Collaborative Research on the Biology of Aging
The NIH’s National Institute on Aging (NIA) and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) in the U.K. seek to support collaborative research projects in both countries focused on understanding the biology of aging. Only applications to support true collaborative research projects under the direction of one U.S. and one U.K. scientist are eligible. The program includes funds to support the international travel of research partners between their U.S. and U.K. laboratories to enhance research training and collaborations. In addition, funds to allow all grantees in the program to participate in annual meetings to promote scientific interaction and discuss recent scientific advances in aging biology will be permitted. Deadlines: Letters of Intent: Feb. 10, 2009; Full Proposal: Mar. 10, 2009. Go to: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AG-09-011.html

Arts & Letters

Creative Capital Foundation - Film/Video and Visual Arts grants
In 2009, Creative Capital will support projects in emerging fields, innovative literature and the performing arts. Applications are accepted online at www.creative-capital.org from February 4 to March 4, 2008. Go to: http://www.creative-capital.org/about/media/2008-0109-awards.html

Community & General Grants

The BankAtlantic Foundation
The Foundation supports four key areas: Community and Economic Development; Human Services, and The Arts. It also considers requests for specific projects, as well as for general operations. The majority of the grants made by the Foundation fall within the $1000 - $3000 range. Funding consideration will be given to programs where BankAtlantic has a business presence. The Foundation will fund an organization one time per calendar year, up to three consecutive years. After three consecutive years of support, an organization may reapply after a one-year non-funding period. Go to: http://www.bankatlantic.com/BAFoundation/

Innovation Awards

Global Venture Challenge 2009 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Global Venture Challenge 2009 – Mar. 25-28, 2009 - is an educational event designed to foster entrepreneurial spirit by engaging students, industry, government and the investment community in the discovery and development of innovative ideas. The ultimate goal is to encourage students to launch new technology-based businesses that can improve the well-being of the world. Specific areas of interest include Industrial Energy Efficiency.

Global Venture Challenge 2009 builds on a successful event held at Oak Ridge for the last two years. Fifteen interdisciplinary graduate school teams from the U.S. and the United Kingdom presented business ideas and competed for a $25,000 cash prize. Additionally, investors met with start-up companies from across the southeastern U.S.

The focus of this year's event is again on energy, one of the world's most critical issues. Graduate school teams from across the globe are being recruited to develop unique and innovative product ideas that can solve existing market needs and have the potential to become sustainable businesses. The Idea to Product ® competition model, which identifies market-viable technologies faster than traditional business plan competitions will be utilized. Team submissions will be judged by diverse panels consisting of experienced energy executives, venture capitalists, technologists, entrepreneurs and the legal profession.

Ideally, teams should be comprised of students from different disciplines (e.g., science, business, law). Teams also should have the support of faculty advisors in those disciplines as well as mentors from outside of the university (e.g., experienced entrepreneurs, technologists and lawyers). The most successful teams are the ones that have this type of composition and external support.

There are three steps required for team participation in the competition: Teams have to submit an Application by Feb. 2, 2009, to be considered for the competition. Teams selected to participate will be notified by February 18, 2009. Selected teams must submit a Technology Commercialization Plan for the competition by Mar. 16, 2009. Selected teams must prepare a Presentation for the live portion of the competition. Go to: http://www.globalventurechallenge.com

Science Education

National Science Foundation - Integrative Graduate Education & Research Traineeship Program (IGERT)
The Integrative Graduate Education and Research Traineeship (IGERT) program (NSF 09-519) has been developed to meet the challenges of educating U.S. Ph.D. scientists and engineers who will pursue careers in research and education, with the interdisciplinary backgrounds, deep knowledge in chosen disciplines, and technical, professional, and personal skills to become, in their own careers, leaders and creative agents for change. The program is intended to catalyze a cultural change in graduate education, for students, faculty, and institutions, by establishing innovative new models for graduate education and training in a fertile environment for collaborative research that transcends traditional disciplinary boundaries. It is also intended to facilitate diversity in student participation and preparation, and to contribute to a world-class, broadly inclusive, and globally engaged science and engineering workforce. Deadlines: Prelim. Proposal - March 13, 2009; Full Proposal (by invitation only) Sept. 14, 2009. Go to: http://www.nsf.gov/pubs/2009/nsf09519/nsf09519.htm?govDel=USNSF_25
